Macular degeneration happens when the central part of the retina, called the macula, wastes away or develops a blind spot. The retina, found at the back of the eye, senses light and transmits signals to the brain so you can see.
 

The retina also controls central vision; hence, when you have macular degeneration, your central vision is affected. This means you may have difficulty seeing things in front of you but are still able to see things on the side.
 

The Types of Macular Degeneration

Macular degeneration is usually an age-related concern, affecting people over 50. Age-related macular degeneration, or AMD, has two primary types, depending on the cause.
 

Dry AMD

Dry macular degeneration happens when the macula wastes away. The exact cause of this is still unknown, but genetic and environmental factors may be responsible. This type affects about 80% of those with AMD. It also causes slow and gradual central vision loss, typically one eye at a time.
 

Wet AMD

Wet AMD is less common but can lead to serious vision loss. It happens when the retina develops abnormal blood vessels that leak blood and fluid. The leak results in a huge blind spot in the central visual field.
 

Warning Signs of Macular Degeneration

While AMD doesn’t usually lead to complete blindness, it can still result in severe vision loss. Left untreated, it can make daily activities, such as reading and driving, extremely difficult. Hence, catching it early should be a priority. Below are the warning signs of macular degeneration.
 

Seeing Wavy Lines

One warning sign of AMD is when straight lines appear wavy. Look at things that are supposed to be straight, like a line of text in a book, bathroom tiles, or bookshelves. If the lines are wavy, seek consultation right away.
 

Blurred Vision

While the blurriness may only signal the need to upgrade your eyeglasses, it can also be a sign of macular degeneration.
 

Blind Spots

Do you see an empty space or a dark spot in your central vision? If so, you might want to get your eyes checked for AMD.
 

Changes in the Way You See Colors

Another common sign of macular degeneration is when there are changes to how you see colors. For instance, the colors that seemed bright before aren’t as bright now.
 

Difficulty in Seeing Things

Macular degeneration can also lead to trouble recognizing faces and difficulty seeing in low light. You might also notice that objects appear smaller than normal.
